| In E-C consecutive interpretation,note-taking can ease the burden of 'memory and work as a reminder for interpreters.When speakers deliver the speech at a fast rate,interpreters need to handle a large amount of information within a short period of time,which poses a great challenge because interpreters must balance note taking and listening and analyzing.Under these circumstances,it remains a question whether interpreters will better understand speakers' logic and optimize their delivery if they give up note-taking and only rely on short-term memory.The thesis tries to answer this question through an experiment,based on Daniel Gile's effort model for consecutive interpretation.In this empirical study,eight students from Grade 2 at GSTI are invited for the experiment.Subjects' recordings are used for both quantitative and qualitative analyses and the quality of interpretation among the interpreters who are allowed to take notes and those who interpret without notes are compared.According to the notes and the interview,the thesis probes into the reasons behind the subjects' different performances.The experiment shows that interpreters focusing too much on note-taking cannot pay enough attention to listening,analyzing,short-term memory and coordination.Thus,their delivery tends to be confusing,illogical and unnatural.In contrast,interpreters without notes could focus more on listening,analyzing and short-term memory.They are able to convey primary information and their delivery is logical and consistent with the way of expression in the target language.In general,they perform better than interpreters who take notes.According to the experiment,the author recommends that interpreters depend less on note-taking and concentrate more on listening and analyzing the source language.Taking down symbols and words without comprehension is by no means a wise choice.Note taking may be unnecessary if interpreters truly understand and internalize what the speaker says. |
