A Study Of Explicitation Strategies In C-E Consecutive Interpreting From The Perspective Of Cultural Schema Theory

This thesis concerns itself with a cultural schema theory approach to explicitation strategies in Chinese-English consecutive interpretation.The previous studies discussed the explicitation strategies in translation in terms of definitions,classifications and motivations,but the cultural factors involved have not received due attention.Cultural schema theory lays emphasis on the cultural factors in translation,and it distinguishes itself into conflict of cultural schema,corresponding of cultural schema,and vacancy of cultural schema.Therefore,this thesis employs cultural schema theory to study the explicitation strategies in C-E consecutive interpretation,specifically devoted to the following three questions:(1)Under conflict of cultural schema theory,what explicitation strategies can be employed in C-E consecutive interpreting?(2)Under corresponding of schema theory,what explicitation strategies can be employed in C-E consecutive interpreting?(3)Under vacancy of schema theory,what explicitation strategies can be employed in C-E consecutive interpreting?The thesis identifies itself as a case and qualitative study.The data are collected from the interpreting text of state councilor and foreign minister Wang Yi's 2019 two sessions press conference.It is concluded that:(1)Under conflict of cultural schema theory,the explicitation strategies adopted include pragmatic explicitation,optional explicitation and obligatory explicitation at the levels of lexical clash and syntactic clash;(2)Under corresponding of cultural schema theory,the explicitation strategies adopted include pragmatic explicitation and optional explicitation;(3)Under vacancy of cultural schema theory,the explicitation strategies adopted include pragmatic explicitation and obligatory explicitation.This thesis discusses the explicitation strategies in C-E consecutive interpreting from the perspective of cultural schema theory,which is expected to shed some light onexplicitation strategy studies in interpretation on one hand,and to extend the application of cultural schema theory on the other hand.
