A Study Of Explicitation In Chinese-english Consecutive Interpretation From The Perspective Of Cohesion Theory

With the increasing frequency of international exchanges,in order to facilitate communication between China and other countries,Chinese-English consecutive interpretation has been widely used on various occasions.Requirements for the quantity and quality of interpreters have also increased evidently.Chinese and English belong to two different language families.So the structure of Chinese and English undertake their own traits.In the course of Chinese-English consecutive interpretation,because of the differences in language level and social background between the two languages,these differences will cause difficulties in the conversion between the two languages.Since the 1990 s,scholars' research on explicitation has gradually risen.Explicitation is the process of expressing information in the target language,which is implied by the source language,but it can be deduced from the context.The study of explicitation principally focuses on translation,but rarely on Chinese-English consecutive interpretation.In this context,based on Halliday and Hasan's Cohesion Theory,this thesis studies explicitation in Chinese-English consecutive interpretation.Based on the current research situation of explicitation in interpretation and translation,the transcripts of press conferences conducted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs during the two sessions from 2014 to 2018 are analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively.From the grammatical and lexical levels,the author analyses what cohesive devices are used in explicitation,and explores the reasons for the realization of explicitation and the implications for interpreters.Through the analysis,it is found that there are more phenomena of explicitation at the grammatical level.Interpreters use the cohesive devices of reference,substitution and conjunction to cause explicitation.The most frequently used cohesive devices are personal reference and conjunction.At the lexical level,both reiteration and repetition occur.But it occurs less frequently.Through the analysis,the author finds that the causes of explicitation are linguistic differences,stylistic differences,social and cultural differences,situational requirements and translators' subjective choices.It is hoped that the author's research can provide some reference for beginners in the field of interpretation.
