C-E Translation Report On New Stories Of Time-honored Brands:On Inheritors(Excerpt)

In this translation project,the author chooses four articles in a reportage work,New Stories of Time-honored Brands: On Inheritors as source text,aiming to introduce the traditional culture of China's time-honored brands to foreigners.The total number of the words in source text reaches 22,461 words.After completing this project,the author summarizes the difficulties she encounters in the translation process and classifies them,and puts forward targeted translating tactics under the guidance of Functionalist Approaches.A large number of culture-loaded words,professional words describing unique techniques,continuous use of four-character phrases and unique lexical cohesion in Chinese make it difficult for the author to achieve semantic coherence among the sentence components as well as conveying adequately the source text's meaning,information,functions and so on.Thus how to achieve intra-textual and inter-textual coherence is the author's biggest difficulty which can be divided into two categories:(1)achieving intra-textual and inter-textual coherence in paratext translation,which exists in translating internal subtitles and graphic annotations;(2)achieving intra-textual and inter-textual coherence in body text translation,which exists in how to process lexical collocation and cohesion with technique terms and continuous use of four-character phrases.Since the translation skopos and expected functions are important elements in this project,the author adopts hetero-functional translation as an overall strategy to deal with translation difficulties under the guidance of Functionalist Approaches.The detailed tactics are as follows:(1)using tactic of “appropriate simplification plus free translation” to translate internal subtitles;(2)using tactic of “proper lexical amplification” to translate graphic annotations;(3)using tactic of “descriptive substitution” to process lexical collocation and cohesion with technique terms;(4)and using “integration with comprehensive analysis” to processcontinuous use of four-character phrases.It has been proved that these tactics help the author achieve intra-textual and inter-textual coherence in the whole translation text.Besides,the project can provide some suggestions and inspirations for other translators facing similar difficulties.
