With the global development in economy and society,it becomes more and more important to know the political trend and developmental inclination of other countries. And it is the political essays that focus on those contents.Political essays involve not only the domestic situations and future plans of a state, but also its domestic and foreign basic guide lines.Meanwhile,in translation process, for the differences between two languages in both words, sentences and cultural environments,it is not an easy work to exactly translate source-text content and make sure that a translating result is smooth. In this dissertation, translation methods on political essays will be discussed, based on Countering Coercion In Maritime Asia——The Theory and Practice of Gray Zone Deterrence,a report that is released in May,2017 by scholars from an American think tank. The translation project,Countering Coercion In Maritime Asia——The Theory and Practice of Gray Zone Deterrence, mainly discusses the coercion in maritime Asia and puts up advice for American policymakers and is a political essay which involves much professional knowledge in the science of strategy, such as gray zone, deterrence theory,stability-instability paradox and so on.The author chooses Executive Summary,Chapter One and Chapter Two of it to conduct this translating exercise.Through the exercise,Chinese experts on the science of strategy could further realize American policies and attitudes towards China and then put up coping strategies.Meanwhile,it also could provide some experience for similar political essays.According to the content and characteristics of the translation project,a great deal of background knowledge is a must in the translation process. Moreover, the translation theory, skopos theory,is also used.Under its instruction, the author specifically analyzes the translation task's text type, variety and the linguistic characteristics.Meanwhile, many examples are chosen from the translation project and are classified according to skopos theory's three major rules, namely skopos rule, intratextual coherence and intertextual coherence.Through these examples, the author explores specific translation skills, such as annotation, amplification, division;distinguishes the differences between English and Chinese, such as hypotaxis and parataxis, substitution and repetition, static and dynamic states;as well as discusses the issue about fidelity. With the help of the above efforts, the author tries to remove obstacles, such as unsmooth expressions, confusing logic and infidelity and achieves expected purposes.
