Diplomatic Interpretation refers to the interpretation, within the scope of theforeign affairs, which takes the foreign affairs as the core, such as foreign pressconference, diplomatic negotiations and so on. Compared with other types ofinterpretation, diplomatic interpretation has the following characteristics in contentsuch as “politics, sensitivity, and ambiguity” and diplomatic interpretation, inlanguage, has the following characteristics such as “formality, rigorousness, lowflexibility”. Based on the characteristics mentioned above, diplomatic interpretation isoften considered a form of interpretation whose flexibility is restricted greatly. Somepeople even think, diplomatic interpretation should adopt the strategy of literalinterpretation. But in order to output the content which the audience can understand, interpreters have to adopt certain strategies of interpretation in practice and make anynecessary adjustments in the output of target language. This paper is based on the function of the Skopos Theory and based on apractice of interpretation practice made by the author myself as the object of study. And this paper conducts parallel corpus analysis between the original speech text byForeign Minister Yang Jiechi in a press conference and my interpretation for hisspeech text. The results show that even if compared with the other fields ofinterpretation, diplomatic interpretation requires more stringent wording ininterpretation. But in order to produce contents which can be the understood to the audience, interpreters may take different strategies, adhere to the Intra-textualCoherence Principle in Skopos Theory and violate the Inter-lingual coherenceprinciple to a certain extent. That is to say interpreters often need to make thecorresponding adjustments to the target language in interpretation. In addition, thispaper classifies the adjustment strategies in my interpreting process and makes ananalysis of its purpose. Based on the summary of my practice, this paper divided theadjustment strategies in my interpretation into six categories:1.the adjustment forexpressing English properly.2.the adjustment for omitting the redundant information.3.the adjustment for adding background information or explanations.4.the adjustmentfor achieving more thinking Time.5.the adjustment for expressing the meaning moreexactly.6. the adjustment for correcting the speaker’s diction errors. Finally, this paper concludes that, in diplomatic interpretation process, theadjustment strategies, to meet the proper expression of target language, account forthe vast majority of the whole interpretation. These adjustment strategies are actuallycarried out to follow the intra-textual coherence principle in Skopos theory. Therefore, this paper verifies the application of the intra-textual principle of coherence indiplomatic interpretation.
