A Study On The English Translation Of TCM Terms From The Perspective Of Intra-textual Coherence

This thesis attempts to study the English translation of Traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) terms from the perspective of intra-textual coherence rule. In the21st century, muchattention is paid to TCM in China and even in other countries. Nowadays, the spectrum ofdisease is ever changing, there will be more and more difficult miscellaneous diseases, thetoxic and side effects of the chemical medicines are becoming more and more obvious. As themost complete traditional medicine system of the world, the unique theories and clinicaleffect of TCM are relatively in line with the needs of contemporary society and people whowant to solve the above problems. The internationalization of TCM has become an inevitabletrend, while the translation of TCM plays a vital role in the process of internationalization ofTCM. In the history of TCM translation, one of the main difficulties is how to translate theunique TCM terms into the target language. Lots of books and magazines related withtranslation of TCM have been officially published and there have been also many materials onthe network, but the quality of the TCM terms translation is not very satisfactory. It hasseriously influenced the understanding and acceptance of TCM in other countries.This thesis analyzes the main factors that influence the English translation of TCMterms, namely, the translator factor, the culture factor and the context of situation factor.Through the study, it finds that the English translation of TCM terms should not rigidlyadhere to some fixed standards and forms and it should change with different requirements.The process of the English translation of TCM terms is not a cluster of kick but a process thatadvances with the times, constantly changes with its development, brings forth the newthrough the old. Hopefully, this thesis will be helpful for the further studies on the translationof TCM terms.
