The report is based on a simulated C-E simultaneous interpretation of two episodes of the Chit Chat with Me,a popular weekly talk show broadcast on Phoenix TV,in September 2018.After the initial attempt to interpret the source material, the reporter realized the biggest difficulty of interpreting lies in its abundance of culture-based humor and it is of great necessity to render optimal relevance to the target audience(TA)so as to reproduce the same or similar humorous effect on them. With that in mind, the reporter decided to classify the major difficulties into two groups:(1)Difficulty of Optimal Ostensive Relevance to TA's Schemata in Culture-Based Humor Processing;(2)Difficulty of Optimal Inferential Relevance to TA's Schemata in Culture-Based Humor Processing. The above two difficulties have undoubtedly obstructed the fluent delivery of the interpreting and therefore, the reporter decided to introduce the schema theory and employ assimilation and accommodation to address them respectively.According to Piaget,a schema develops as assimilation, accommodation and equilibration interacts with one another.Assimilation is the filtering of new information while accommodation is the modification of internal schemata.Equilibration comes into power as the balance between assimilation and accommodation is lost. Thus, our schema system can be constantly developed and enriched.Based on such a theoretical framework, the report comes up with two coping tactics:(1)Assimilation for Optimal Ostension to TA's Schemata in Culture-Based Humor;(2)Accommodation for Optimal Inference to TA's Schemata in Culture-Based Humor. The primary purpose of this report is to shed some light on how to simultaneously interpret TV talk shows abundant in culture-based humor in an efficient and effective way and provide a different angle for other interpreters who are also struggling with the reproduction of cultural humorous effect.
