This report is based on the translation of a physical education textbook(Teaching Fundamental Motor Skills),and the translation techniques applied in the framework of semantic and communicative translation are discussed. This report consists of five parts: introduction, task description, the process of translation, case study and conclusion. The background of the translation task is briefly addressed in this report, and the translation techniques which deal with the difficulties in the process of translation are analyzed. In the framework of semantic and communicative translation theory, this report has a detailed analysis of the translation techniques adopted in PE textbook translation, and case study has been conducted on lexical and sentential level. The source text is a PE textbook, and short sentences are frequently used to describe various motor skills,in most cases, semantic communication is adopted in the process of translation.Meanwhile, communicative translation is mainly used in the following circumstances. On lexical level,in translating nominalized phrases in the source text, conversion of word class is used to make the Chinese version more idiomatic.Amplification is used to add some explanatory words and conjunctions for semantic clarity and grammatical correctness.Due to the disparity of Chinese and English, omission is mainly used to leave out conjunctions and pronouns in complicated sentences translation.Repetition is adopted to render the target text clear and fluent.Paraphrase is applied to explain the specific meanings that specific images represent. On sentential level, reverse translation is used to adjust the word order or sentence structure to conform to the conventions of the target language.Besides, due to the disparity between English and Chinese in the usage of active voices and passive voices, passive voice structure is much less frequently used in Chinese than English, many passive voice English sentences are translated into active voice Chinese sentences to produce a more natural target text. The aim of this translation report is to make a summary of the translation techniques used and the experience gained, providing translators some references for translating the texts of same type.
