| Building an informative official English university website that updates timely is one of the key tasks for a university to accelerate its pace of internationalization.At present,there are some existing problems in the English translation of the college overviews of Fujian Normal University,with most of the colleges’ official websites devoid of English overviews.Entrusted by the official English website of Fujian Normal University,the author undertook the task of translating the Chinese college overviews of FNU’s 25 colleges into English.Due to cultural differences between China and the West,western and Chinese audiences differ in their wanted information about Chinese university websites,and the same text is likely to give rise to different reactions in the two parties.Therefore,audience awareness must be deeply rooted in the translator’s mind in the process of translating Chinese college websites.The translation practice report is guided by new rhetoric.Developed out of classic rhetoric,new rhetoric is committed to the centrality of audience and lays emphasis on the interaction between rhetor and audience.Audience is a necessary part of translation as well,which reflects the kinship between new rhetoric and translation.Introducing the audience-central new rhetoric as theoretical guidance,this report analyzes the process of the Chinese-English translation of FNU’s college overviews,summarizes the main problems in the translation,and proposes targeted solutions to resolve them.This report consists of five parts,including the significance of the research,the structure of the report,the translation background,and project implementation,literature review,case study and conclusion.It investigates how the new rhetoric functions in translating college overviews from the lexical,sentential and text level. |
