In recent years,the state has proposed to build education equity and promote the balanced development of compulsory education in urban and rural areas.More and more attention has been paid to rural basic education.Xiuyan Manchu Autonomous County is an impoverished county of Liaoning Province.The development of basic education in the county is relatively backward.English teaching in the area cannot adapt to the requirements of the curriculum reform.It is necessary to investigate and research on the current situation of English teaching in the county.The investigation can not only help to get comprehensive information about the current situation of local English teaching,but also provide investigation basis for the local educational administrative departments to make policies related to English education.Guided by multidimensional analysis theory of teaching elements,constructivism and English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education(2011),this study investigates the current situation of English teaching in rural junior high schools of the county,analyzes the causes of the existing problems and puts forward corresponding suggestions for improvement of English teaching.Taking five junior high schools in the north of the county as samples,the study investigates the current situation of English teaching in the rural schools in the aspects of the arrangement of class hours,teaching resources,English teaching faculty,students? learning,classroom teaching and teaching assessment with the research methods of questionnaires,interviews and classroom observations.The investigation results show that English teaching in the rural junior high schools of the county are faced with the problems of inadequate teaching resources,difficult textbooks,weak teacher resources,students? low learning interest and poor foundation,low efficiency of classroom teaching and unreasonable assessment.The causes leading to the problems include English teachers? low professional quality,parents? neglect of children? English learning,the lack of English learning environment,the negative influence of exam-oriented education,imperfect management of the schools and the local education administrative department and governments? inadequate education investment.The thesis puts forward the following suggestions for improvement of English teaching in the rural schools of the county: strengthen the construction of the ranks of teachers,use the teaching materials creatively,optimize classroom teaching,reform the English assessment system,create English learning environment,enhance home-school communication and increase education investment.It is hoped that the thesis can help to draw the attention of teachers,parents,schools and relevant departments to English education in impoverished rural areas and promote the reform and development of English teaching in this area.
