The New Curriculum Standards for Junior Middle School English clearly states that the overall goal of the English course in the basic education stage is to develop students' ability of comprehensive language.In the junior high school stage,they can exchange information with others on various topics of daily life and present their opinions.It can be seen that speaking plays an important role in English learning and human communication activities.The cultivation of speaking ability has become an indispensable part of developing students' English ability comprehensively.However,due to the geographical location and lack of educational resources in rural areas of northern Shaanxi,there are few oral English studies.Therefore,it has great significance to investigate the current situation of oral English teaching in rural areas of northern Shaanxi.The author aims to solve two problems by means of questionnaires and interviews.First,what are the current situations of oral English teaching for junior high school students in rural areas of northern Shaanxi?Second,what are the reasons lead to the current situations?And,what kind of teaching suggestions should be taken on the current situations.The investigation is divided into two stages:to hand out the questionnaire(teacher questionnaire and student questionnaire)and do the interview:the analysis and discussion.Finally,the author analyzes the questionnaire and interview,then discuss the results combined with SPSS17.0.Through the analysis of questionnaires and interview results,the author draw the following conclusions.First,the current situations of oral English teaching are as follows: Students and teachers in northern Shaanxi don't pay enough attention to oral English;Students are not confident enough in oral English learning.They have fewer chances to use oral English and fewer oral activities;The English teachers' own oral level is not very high,they hardly pay attention to the phonetic intonation and the cultivation of students' oral pronunciation standards and oral expression ability.The teaching method is simple and the model is a little old.The teachers do not give students corresponded guidance about oral English.Second,the reasons lead to the current situations are as follows:The comprehensive ability of teachers is not high:They have fewer opportunities to participate in professional training:The schools are lack of advanced teaching resources and infrastructure:There are fewer or no oral activities in schools.In response to these problems,the author suggests that students need to develop good oral learning habits and build self-confidence.The teachers should not only improve the comprehensive ability and innovate oral English classroom teaching mode,but also improve teaching conditions and English teaching evaluation system.The schools should optimize teaching materials and teaching aid.Besides,teaching conditions should be improved and verbal test should be added to each examination.Then the quality of teaching and students' oral English expression ability can be improved.
