Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is a group of syndromes officially named by the US Centers for Disease Control in 1988.The disease is characterized by chronic or recurrent fatigue, low fever, sore throat, muscle pain, joint pain, headache and nonspecific manifestations of psychoneurosis. The US Centers for Disease Control has predicted the disease will become one of the major health problems of the 21 st century. This translation practice selects 11 news reports on CFS from the science desk of theNew York Times, which focus on the history of CFS research in American medical field and the recent research results.Hopefully, this translation practice can provide knowledge on chronic fatigue syndrome for Chinese readers.English medical news reports are featured byabundantce of professional terms, concise language and rigorous logic. Moreover, complicated adverbial and attributive modifiers often appear in these news reports. This translation practice puts the problems encountered in this translationpractice into three categories: logical conversion problems in the translation of medical terms, logical conversion problems in the translation of complex modifiers, and logical conversion problems in the translation of negative structures. To solve the first type of translation problems, the paper adopts the methods of using nouns or noun phrases instead of pronouns, selecting professional meanings of common words and converting the static English expressions into the dynamic Chinese expressions. For second kind of problems, this paper puts forward the method of changing complex adverbial and attributive modifiers into non-modifiers.For the third kind of problems, this paper uses the methods of transfer of the negative words and changing hidden negation into explicit negation. It is hoped that this practice report can provide some reference for future translation of similar news reports.
