Translator's subjectivity is indispensable in translation activities to improve foreign public awareness of China. In this thesis,a case study on English translation of expressions with Chinese characteristics in Xi Jinping's Up and out of Poverty is conducted to discover how the translator of this book, with the prerequisite of fidelity to the source text, made translator's subjectivity function to introduce experience and culture of China, and construct a positive national image through translation. This study is based on André Lefevere's theory.Under that framework, expressions with Chinese characteristics are divided into two categories: illustration of ideology, and poetological expressions. In terms of illustration of ideology,to introduce and,if perhaps, promote China's experience of locality governance and poverty alleviation, the translator ensured consistency of terminology in China's political literature, while particular translations of political terms were different with their precedents in specific historical periods to make the target text compatible with historical context of reform and opening-up.And particular ideological content in the source text was translated through deverbalization to increase acceptability of the target audience.Besides, endnotes,as a form of supplementation, were applied to illustrate political concepts unique in China's ideology. In terms of translation of poetological expressions with Chinese characteristics, these expressions are divided into subgroups, which are: quotations from Chinese classics, slangs, idioms, antithesis sentences, and other forms of expressions with Chinese characteristics. The translator applied various strategies, including: “transplantation” of direct translations from sinologists, free translation, idiomatic translation, recomposing, compensation, etc.Though morphosyntactic and semantic features might be different among those subgroups, the translator strived for the transfer of connotative meanings of the original poetological expressions, and the balance between poetics of the literary system of target language and preservation of poetological characteristics of Chinese in the source text.
