Abstract/Summary:
Liangshan Yi Area is a multi-ethnic area dominated by Yi people.Due to the special political and economic form of The Yi people in Liangshan, the government could not control the area and liangshan once became "independent".Historically, the local government’s policy of ethnic discrimination and oppression has been the cause of tension and confrontation with the Yi people in Liangshan.During the Period of the Republic of China, the Chinese society underwent an important transformation.Under the unified multi-ethnic country, the local forces in Chuankang had the dual colors of local government and warlord. The relationship between the local forces in Chuankang and the Yi people in Liangshan has not only the tendency of transforming to the modern national relationship, but also the trace of history. It is worthwhile to study the relationship between the local forces in Chuankang and the Yi people in Liangshan during the Republic of China. This paper discusses the relationship between chuankang local forces and Liangshan Yi people in the Republic of China from three parts. The first part presents the isolation between liangshan Yi area and modern nation-state.First of all,the traditional social order and ethnic relations in Liangshan Yi area are described. Then, after the drastic social changes, the social changes in Liangshan Yi area in the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China were described one by one.At last, after the establishment of the Republic of China,it narrates the frontier land integration lawsuit of the modern nation-state.The second part elaborates the relationship between the warlords of Sichuan province and liangshan Yi people from the late 1920 s to the mid-1930 s before the influence of the central government goes deep into Sichuan.During this period,Sichuan province implemented the zone system, and Liangshan area was under the jurisdiction of Liu Wenhui’s twenty-four Army.Liu Wenhui had great autonomy in this area, and his attitude towards barbarians and policies to barbarians were the continuation of his previous policies.Liangshan area is located at the border between Sichuan and Yunnan. The forces of Dian army intruded into Liangshan area several times, which aggravated the ethnic conflicts and estrangement in the area. The third part expounds the relationship between the central forces and the Yi people in Liangshan after the middle of 1930 s.In the mid-1930 s,the central forces went deep into Sichuan, broke the original system of defense areas, supported Liu Xiang as chairman of Sichuan Province, and ordered all armies to surrender the defense areas under the jurisdiction of Sichuan provincial government.Liu Wenhui, who was in charge of Liangshan area, retreated to Xikang in the struggle with Liu Xiang. The central government urged Liu Wenhui to accelerate the establishment of Xikang province in order to divide The forces of Liu Xiang. After Liu Xiang’s death in 1938,Liu Wenhui assigned the peaceful area of Liangshan area to Xikang in the power competition and game with the warlord of Sichuan province and the central government. In 1939,Xikang was established and Liu Wenhui became chairman of xikang Provincial government.Liangshan district was divided into two provinces of Sichuan and Kang. The two provinces of Sichuan and Kang have changed their previous attitude towards Yi people, formulated appropriate policies according to different conditions of each province, eased ethnic conflicts and estrangement, broke the previous chaotic pattern, and gradually put the relationship with Yi people on the right track.Under the background of the comprehensive Anti-Japanese War,the national consciousness and national consciousness of liangshan Yi people changed, and they began to seek for political recognition and support the Anti-Japanese War from all aspects. In short, the relationship between the local forces in Chuankang and the Yi people in Liangshan during the Republic of China was characterized by both fierce confrontation and constant compromise. The macro-control of the central government and the practical governance of the local government have changed the ethnic relations in Liangshan area and alleviated the ethnic conflicts and estrangement to some extent. However, the local forces in Chuankang, under the rule of the Kuomintang, did not ease the contradictory relationship in a real sense due to the discrimination and policy inequality in dealing with the Yi people in Liangshan.
