In recent years,core competencies have been valued by the majority of educators,and it has played an important role in China curriculum reform.English core competencies include language competence,learning ability,thinking quality and cultural awareness.Secondary vocational education is an important part of our education system.The educators should notice the cultivation of English core competencies of secondary vocational students.However,in practical observation,it can be found that there are differences in the cultivation of English core competencies between vocational school students in urban and suburban areas.This study takes Dadukou District and Nanchuan District of Chongqing as an example.By comparison of language competence,learning ability,thinking quality and cultural awareness,the study analyzes the differences in the cultivation of English core competencies of urban and suburban vocational school students.At the same time,based on the results of the questionnaires,the study explores the factors that affect the differences in the cultivation of English core competencies of urban and suburban vocational school students of Chongqing.The study puts forward corresponding strategies to improve the cultivation of English core competencies.This study aims to answer the following three questions:(1)Are there any differences in the cultivation of English core competencies(language competence,learning ability,thinking quality and cultural awareness)between urban and suburban secondary vocational school students of Chongqing?(2)What are the factors that influence the differences in the cultivation of English core competencies of secondary vocational students in urban and suburban areas of Chongqing?(3)What are the cultivating strategies to improve English core competencies of secondary vocational school students in urban and suburban areas of Chongqing?There are 311 students and 20 teachers from two vocational schools in Chongqing to fill in the questionnaires.The study uses SPSS 23.0 and Excel to analyze the data.The following differences are found:(1)There are significant differences in language competence between urban and suburban secondary vocational school students of Chongqing;(2)There are significant differences in thinking quality between urban and suburban secondary vocational school students of Chongqing;(3)There are significant differences in cultural awareness between urban and suburban secondary vocational school students of Chongqing.However,there are no differences in learning ability between urban and suburban secondary vocational school students of Chongqing.Based on the results of the questionnaires,the factors affect the differences in the cultivation of English core competencies of urban and suburban secondary vocational school students of Chongqing,including two aspects: teachers and students.To improve the cultivation of English core competencies between urban and suburban vocational school students,the author puts forward the following suggestions:(1)in terms of schools;(2)in terms of teachers;(3)in terms of students.It hopes to provide some references for the future researches on English corecompetencies.
