New National English Curriculum Standards of Compulsory Education(2011)has made great demands on vocabulary for primary students.It explicitly requires students to meet the requirements of secondary standard:Students should be aware of that words are made of letters,students should be aware of that the way to learn vocabulary is to learn its sound,meaning and form,and students should learn vocabulary of 600-700,and about 50 phrases,then students should apply almost 400 vocabulary to express Therefore,it is not difficult to find the importance of vocabulary in primary English learning in China Every kid likes playing,so game is the best way to attract students' attention in class.Therefore,the author tries to introduce vivid and interesting games in vocabulary teaching process,encourage students to participate in the process of games,gradually improve their interest in learning vocabulary,combine playing games with learning words,and finally strengthen the mastery of vocabularyThe research questions are as follows1.Are students of experimental class more interested in English vocabulary learning than that of control class after using games in vocabulary teaching in rural primary schools?2.Can the application of games to English vocabulary teaching in rural primary schools enhance students' vocabulary memory and retention?In order to find out the effect of using games in vocabulary teaching,based on the theory of input hypothesis,information processing theory and multiple intelligence theory,this paper took students of two parallel classes in Grade 4 from Xinglong Primary School,a rural primary school in Yuzhong County of Lanzhou city as the experimental subjects.Pretesting proved that there was no significant difference between two classes,therefore the author determined experimental class and control class randomly During one-semester's teaching experiment(from February 25,2019 to June 26,2019),games were used in in experimental class's vocabulary teaching,while the traditional teaching method which included presentation,practice and production was adopted in the control class.In this study,pre-test,six immediate tests,delayed test,questionnaires,and interview were used to conduct comparative research and analysis on experimental class and control classThrough the research,the games were popular among students.Using games in the process of English vocabulary teaching can stimulate students' interest in learning English.In the six immediate tests,the difference between the experimental class and the control class was not obvious,but in the delayed test,the average scores of the experimental class was significantly higher than that of the control class.It had been proved that using games in vocabulary teaching can enhance students' vocabulary memory and retentionIn the sixth chapter of the thesis,the author listed some implications from the use of games in primary school English vocabulary teaching and the limitations of this research.The author hoped that this study can help the English teachers of primary schools so that students could be more happily in learning and teachers could be more relaxed in teaching.
