Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM)classics are a collection of Chinese medical knowledge and valuable clinical experience from the ancient people. The translation of TCM classics builds a bridge for the transmission of TCM culture.Today,TCM ushers in the "going out" trend and has attracted more and more international attention. Therefore,it is urgent to solve the obstacles on the road of the translation of ancient medical works to promote extensive and widespread transmission of TCM knowledge and culture. The Yellow Emperor's Canon of Medicine has been regarded as an encyclopedia that explains principles of medical science and medicine knowledge in a traditional and ethnic language, which at the same time causes difficulty in its translation. The thesis, taking the Yellow Emperor's Canon of Medicine translated by Li Zhaoguo as the research text, focuses on the identification between the rhetoric effects of the original language and its target translation from the perspective of rhetorical criticism, and analyzes similarities and differences between the composition mechanisms and the core rhetorical effects of reduplicated words and direct anadiplosis through literature research and qualitative analysis approaches.Focusing on whether the translation of the two rhetorical devices can bring the readers in the target language the same cognitive orientation as the readers in the source language, the thesis looks into the key principles of the English translation of the two figures of speech in TCM classics as well as their specific translation skills. The thesis also attempts to enrich the theoretical study of English translation studies on rhetorical devices in TCM works.Reduplicated words and direct anadiplosis are both formed by the repetition of words or phrases. However, the reappearance of their rhetorical effects has different emphases: A reduplicated word is expressed by the repetition of both sound and form.Furthermore,it often contains a metaphorical connotation, which greatly influences the cognitive orientation. Therefore,to bridge the cognitive gap,it is necessary to pay more attention to the revealing of its metaphor than to the retaining of its form. While a direct anadiplosis is composed of head to tail words, with its meaning standing independently of its form. The rhetorical effect of direct anadiplosis is reflected by the repetition of sound in the language level and the cohesion of meaning in the content level. Therefore, the English translation of a direct anadiplosis focuses on the flexible retaining of the form to connect the context. In summary,in Yellow Emperor's Canon of Medicine,a reduplicated word can be translated by the following translation skills according to if there is a metaphorical meaning: a)to translate a reduplicated word by simile;b)to translate a reduplicated word by metaphor;c)to translate a reduplicated word by onomatopoeia, alliteration or rhyme;d)to translate a reduplicated word by adjective or gerunds synonyms. The translation of direct anadiplosis focuses on flexible retaining of its form by adopting different grammatical structures.Specific translation skills include: a)to translate direct anadiplosis by retaining the original form;b)to retain direct anadiplosis by nominalization;c)to retain direct anadiplosis by modifying the voice;d)to retain direct anadiplosis by a parallel structure;e)to translate direct anadiplosis by participial phrases of V-ing or attributive clauses.
