This is an English-Chinese translation report. The text translated is Chapter Four of A Student's Introduction to English Grammar. As a descriptive grammar textbook, its language style and practical examples are close to life and facts, the grammar rules described in the textbook are clear and easy to understand, and the contents of grammar terms are comprehensive and extensive.Rodney Huddleston and Geoffrey K.Pullum jointly wrote the textbook who made a comprehensive and detailed interpretation of English grammar. This translation report includes the following aspects: the selected text and authors, the translation significance, the structure of the report, difficulties encountered in translation practice, translation methods adopted for translation difficulties, and achievements and reflections on this translation practice. In the process of translation, there are mainly two translation difficulties encountered which are difficulties at lexical level and syntactic level. At the lexical level, the difficulties mainly include the translation of term and the translation of polysemy;translation difficulties at the syntactic level are mainly focused on the translation of attributive clauses, passive sentences and inverted sentences. These sentences are relatively complex in structure and some sentences have more insertions, which is a major challenge.Considering the language features and styles of such texts, the author uses corresponding translation methods that analyze and solve translation difficulties with examples. At the lexical level, the translation method of the extension of word meaning is primarily used to translate terms. As to polysemy, choosing the appropriate meaning according to the context, which is the selection of word meaning is a good way to translate. At the syntactic level, the writer selects the translation method of attributive clause with attributive pre-translation and attributive post-translation,mainly utilizes the restructuring method for passive sentences and mainly chooses reverse translation for inverted sentences. This translation practice hopes to provide some references for the translation methods of English grammar texts. As a practical text, the writer should pay attention to its language features in the process of translation so as to make the translation close to the original style and reflect the original features. At the same time, some words cannot be translated accurately during the process of translation practice because of the vacillating expression capability, which still needs the joint efforts of many scholars to translate.
