A Report On E-C Translation Of Privileged And Confidential:The Secret History Of The President’s Intelligence Advisory Board(Chapter Eight)

This report is based on the E-C translation of the eighth chapter,excerpted from the historical document,Privileged and Confidential: The Secret History of the President’s Intelligence Advisory Board.This chapter mainly introduces the important role played by the President’s Intelligence Advisory Board in intelligence collection,analysis and evaluation,and overseas intelligence activities.A widespread use of proper nouns about organizations,historical events and persons,as well as long and complex sentences in this document pose great challenges to the translator in terms of understanding the source text and the selection of translation methods.This report is divided into five chapters.Chapter one introduces the background of the task,content of the source text and commissioner’s requirements.Chapter two briefly introduces Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory and its feasibility in historical document translation.Chapter three describes the translation procedures,including pre-translation preparation,translation process and post-translation revision.Chapter four analyzes specific translation problems using appropriate translation techniques and methods under the guidance of Functional Equivalence Theory.The final chapter summarizes the experience from this translation task.The proper nouns in the source text are subdivided into organizations,historical events,and people’s names,the most proper translating methods for which are literal translation,annotation,and transliteration with annotation respectively.On the syntactical level,the translator discusses the changes of the English passive voice into the Chinese active one;for the long and complex sentences,linear translation and division are adopted.
