The famous Sinologist James Legge(1815-1897)began to study and translate Chinese classics in the mid-nineteenth century. He was the first British who systematically introduced and translated dozens of Chinese classics and literary works into English language world.Legge's translation versions are mainly recorded in Chinese Classics and The Sacred Books of China, which have been treated as standard translations in the field of Sinology. The source texts of this translation report are three sinological papers on Chinese literature written by Professor Legge: Two Heroes of Chinese History,The Late Appearance of Romances and Novels in the Literature of China, and On Chinese Poetry. These papers are originally selected from the notes of Legge's Sinology speech, which contain a large amount of academic information about Sinology in the field of Chinese literature. The Sinology knowledge in the source text needs to be accurately expressed in the translation text, and the quantity and quality of the professional information should also be guaranteed. The source texts also contain a part of Legge's English translation and transcultural rewriting of Chinese literary works, including historical novels and poetry.Sinological papers are highly specialized in language, whose research content is the specific field of a particular subject,so that such texts are important reference for academic researches in this field. The academic information in the text is subject to interdisciplinary research on history, literature, religion, transculture and other professional fields. The translator adopts the methods of stylistic analysis and case studies to analyze the specific translation cases. Therefore, when translating Sinological papers, translators should ensure that the professional content is accurate and complete, and also take readability into account. The purpose of this translation task is to discover the difficulties in translating English sinological papers, summarize the translating techniques of such text, and explore more feasible translation strategies of sinological papers.
