Logic Analysis And Translation Of Informative From The Perspective Of Cognitive Context

This report is on the translation of The Environmental Assessment for Field-testing of Rice,Genetically Engineered to Express Human Lactoferrin from English into Chinese.Being in the category of informative text it describes mainly the rice transgenic technology along with the applicable environmental regulations,featured by abundant technical terms,careful word choice,professional writing style and intricate logic relations.In translation process the author of the report encountered the difficulties in understanding the background knowledge,retrieving the implications from the seemingly common words and the analysis of logic relations,etc.To tackle with the problems the author attempts to apply the ideas suggested in relevance theory and logic analysis in understanding the original text and it turns out instructive to working on the translation project.Later,the author selected the typical discourses and performed the translation analysis and the experience learned from is summarized as follows.(1)In translating the definitions of transgenic technique,the emphasis should be put on different components of a sentence depending the definition methodology,i.e.the process description for functional definition,the restrictive contents for stipulative definition,the explanatory words for lexical definition,and the narrowing conditions in the definition by genus and differentia.Furthermore,it is as important to identify these key points in understanding the source text as to make them emphatic in target language in order for the readers to experience the exact meaning from the translation.(2)It is fundamental to clarify the logic relationship among the relevant concepts within and between sentence(s),such as inclusive,disparate,contrary or contradictory concepts.The same relation must be exactly delivered to the translated version which ensures the logical identity between the source and target texts.(3)Since the scientific propositions are frequently interwoven withacademic background information for rendering quality translation with semantic accuracy,idiomatic expressiveness and logical clarity.(4)As for normative modal propositions it is essential to deliver the mandatory implications contained in the original text to the target language,while for the possibility modal propositions the inclinations,either explicitly or explicitly expressed,should be clearly indicated in the translation,free from translator's tendentiousness.It is hoped that the experience summary would be of consultative significance to the text translation in similar context.
