The Translation Of Figures Of Speech In The Biographical Texts

Based on the translation of Chapters One to Five on the First Part of Educated:A Memoir by Tara Westover,this report summarizes the translation problems and translation strategies encountered in the translation practice process.As a biographical text,the source text possesses the characteristics of informative texts and expressive texts.Therefore,it fits the standards of translation practice,and matches with the author’s translation competence.A major feature of biographical text is the usage of figures of speech.The differences between Chinese and English make it more difficult to reproduce the original rhetorical effects.Thus,to achieve the perfect match of forms and contents,the author has to pay more attention to the translation of figures of speech.In this report,the author has summarized these issues and corresponding translation strategies.In order to reflect the factualness and literary aesthetic value of the original,the translation version should accurately convey the text information and transfer the emotion in it.Therefore the author has chosen different translation strategies,which include literal translation and free translation,as well as extension,compensation and shift,etc..The whole practice process was guided by George Steiner’s hermeneutics analysis on translation,which aims to achieve the same expressive and rhetorical effects in the target language.The author has summarized the typical problems and strategies used in her translation practice,hoping to provide reference for other translators Through this translation practice,the author has a deeper understanding of biographical text.What’s more,the author has mastered more translation strategies and experiences,and know more about translation process,which will be lay a solid foundation for future translation work.
