The studies on the translation of Chinese contemporary literature have attracted much academic attentions in recent years while the research on aesthetic representation of translations remained quite inadequate. As one of the representative works of Alai,Chen Ai Luo Ding is co-translated by Howard Goldblatt and his wife Sylvia Lin,and it has aroused extensive discussion in the circle of translation studies both at home and abroad. This thesis attempts an intensive study on their co-translated work, especially the aesthetic representation of the original work, also hoping to provide some references for further researches and to shed light on the“Going-global" process of Chinese contemporary literatureBased on the translation aesthetic representation theory, this research conducts an analysis of the Chinese text of Chen Ai Luo Ding and its English version Red Poppies A Novel of Tibet from the perspectives of phonetics, lexis, semantics and pragmatics, with a special focus on the importance of aesthetic representation in the process of translation. This study attempts to answer the following three questions:i).What are the aesthetic values of the source text of Chen Ai Luo Ding??).How do Goldblatt and Sylvia Lin represent aesthetic values of the source text in the translation of Red Poppies:A Novel of Tibet??).Why do Goldblatt and Sylvia Lin represent the aesthetic values of the source text in such a way?Through intensive contrastive analyses of source and target texts on the four levels, the main conclusions of this study are as follow:first of all,as a legend story with a high aesthetic value,Chen Ai Luo Ding is equipped with diverse language forms and ethnic customs, which has greatly enhanced the expression effect of the work and improved its artistic charm. In the second place,in the process of translating source language, the translators take advantage of the imitation of discourse pattern of source language as the main method, and employ compensating methods such as explanation, replacement and self-creation as well as bridging cultural obstacle while representing aesthetics. Finally, due to the radical differences between Chinese and English, and the influence of aesthetic subjects and objects as well as the translators'less sensitivity to Chinese minority cultural features, the English version has lost some aesthetic values and Chinese cultural connotations of the source textOn the basis of translation aesthetic theory, this thesis analyzes the English version of Red Poppies:A Novel of Tibet, and aims to give insights for solutions of improving the translation quality of Chinese contemporary literature, pursuing a better cross-cultural communication between China and the West.
