Disfluency In Interpreting

Fluency plays an important role not only in evaluating interpreting quality,but also in the audience's judgment on the interpreter's ability.However,due to the complexity and difficulty of interpreting activities,disfluency is not uncommon in interpreting.Interpreters should try their best to reduce disfluency in interpreting and improve the fluency of interpretation output.This report is based on the disfluent phenomena in the interpreting for a business negotiation meeting conducted by the author during the World Ports Conference in 2019,which involves both C-E and E-C consecutive interpreting.The report introduces the background,objectives,features of the meeting and the background of the employed interpreter,covering the overall process of the interpreting task,including pre-task preparation,interpreting process and post-task description.Then,the author reviews and summarizes the existing research on disfluency to build a theoretical framework of the report and comes up with corresponding research scheme.Based on research and summary,the author divides the disfluent phenomena in her interpreting practice into three categories:pause,repeat and self-repair.Typical examples of disfluencies in each category are selected with the causes of them analyzed and summarized.By analyzing and reflecting on the disfluent phenomena in the interpreting task,the author completes the report with the purpose to make more targeted and scientific interpreting practice in the future for herself,and hopefully,provide some insights for student interpreters and interpreting scholars to reduce disfluency in interpreting,thus improving the overall interpreting quality.
