With the development of discourse linguistics,paragraphs and discourses have increasingly served as the acceptable translation unit.Functional linguist Halliday and Hasan put forward the Discourse Cohesion Theory,and divided cohesion devices into reference,substitution,ellipsis,conjunction and lexical cohesion.And the theory focuses on the equivalence of cohesion and coherence between the source text and the target text in order to avoid the mechanical translation,which conforms to the main principle of the academic translation to accurately express the information.The theory embraces clear classification and can be conductive to offering an effective guidance for the translation.This paper,on the basis of the Cohesion Theory,analyzes the application of discourse cohesion in translation of academic text,the excerpts from The Biopsychosocial Model of Health and Disease—New Philosophical and Scientific Developments.The differences in the cohesion devices between English and Chinese are also taken into consideration.In order to achieve the fluency and coherence of the target text,such five cohesion devices and their specific applications in the translation are analyzed,and coherence serves as the ultimate object of cohesion.Therefore,it embraces great practical significance to apply such cohesive devices in the process of translation.
