The development period of French art songs is the mid-nineteenth century and at the beginning of the twentieth century.It is evolved from a form of French music—Romance.The French art songs are famous for its unique implicit,exquisite,refined and elegant style.There are three stages: early stage,mid-term and late stage in the development period of French art songs.The French art songs own deep national character of the French nation,brand of salon culture and combine closely with literature.Faure was an outstanding composer of the French art songs writing.In his life,the time of musical composition takes him up as long as 65 years.In his career of composition,he kept composing the art songs.His high achievement in French music history can't separate from his composition of art songs.This thesis is mainly to analyze the characters of Faure's early stage art songs and the modes of singing by studying Faure's Rêve d'amour,Automne,Sylvie,Rencontre.This thesis divides into three chapters,the first chapter tells the developing and features of French art songs,and Faure's lifetime and composition.The second chapter analyzes musical structure and style characteristic of Rêve d'amour,Automne,Sylvie,Rencontre,and summarizes the features of Faure's early stage art songs.The third chapter states the singing feature and artistic processing of Faure's art songs in the early days from the aspects of requirements of breath,language of singing,tone of showing,and expression of emotion.
