Language is a tool in communication.Learning a language is a way for us to communicate with others and express our personal opinions. In the process of English teaching, teachers should not only teach students the basic knowledge of grammar, sentence patterns and phrases.More importantly, they should develop students' ability to communicate in English. However,in the border areas, due to the remote geographical location, information occlusion, lagging educational development and other reasons, the students' enthusiasm and interest in learning English is not high, and they think that learning English is only to cope with the exam, otherwise,it is useless. Therefore, the problem of students' low English proficiency and performance deviation has long existed in the border areas, and even become a "heart disease" of English teachers. In high school English classes in the border areas, there are few students who can actively speak and participate in the discussion, and most students still show a state of silence in class. This not only hinders the smooth progress of teaching, but also makes it difficult to cultivate students' language competence.Although some experts at home and abroad have conducted a great many researches on this problem, there are few references due to the different research subjects and environments. This study mainly focuses on the silence of high school students in Linxiang District No.1 Middle School of Lincang City, explores the reasons, and puts forward the corresponding countermeasures, hoping to be able to help the teaching in the future. This study relies on three theoretical bases, namely, output hypothesis, constructivism learning theory and interactive theory, and takes 243 students in Grade1 and Grade 2 of Linxiang District No.1 middle school as the research subjects.Three methods are used to collect data, including questionnaire survey, interview and observation. And the results indicate that there is indeed silence among high school students in border areas.Research shows that the reasons for students' silence can be generally divided into three aspects: students, teachers and the learning environment.Firstly, the reasons of students are language ability, personality factor, lack of self-confidence,conformity and long-term bad study habits.Secondly, the reasons of teachers are teacher-student relationship, questioning skills, unreasonable feedback and inadequate waiting time. Finally, the depressing classroom atmosphere will also affect students' participation in class.Based on these reasons, this paper puts forward some solutions.Firstly, students should improve their language competence and enhance their self-confidence.Secondly,teachers should pay attention to their questioning skills and try to give every student the chance to speak English, give reasonable feedback to students, and cultivate a good teacher-student relationship. Finally,a free and happy learning atmosphere should be created and rich classroom activities should be carried out. This study also finds that the traditional concept of respecting teachers and valuing education which repeatedly appeared in previous studies that influence students' silence,is not found in this study.Although this study has found some reasons for students' silence in class, there are still many problems to be solved in the investigation and study of the silence phenomenon in high school English classes in the border areas, which need to further be tested and improved in the future teaching practice. This paper has a total of six chapters. The preface mainly expounds the background, significance and importance of this research. The second chapter classifies and sorts out the relevant researches on classroom silence at home and abroad. The third chapter introduces the design of this study, including the research problem, the research subjects, the tools used in the research process, the collection of research data and the summary of this chapter. The fourth chapter analyzes the research data. The fifth chapter puts forward the corresponding countermeasures according to the analysis results. The last chapter is a summary of the full paper. It includes new findings from the study, shortcomings of the study, and suggestions for future research.
