As we all know,the ultimate purpose of language learning is communication and information exchange,and learning English is no exception.For most Chinese students,they mainly learn English through English courses arranged by the school.The English class is their main place to practice spoken English.While the practice of spoken English is mainly achieved through classroom interaction.Therefore,the interaction between teachers and students and the interaction between students and students in the English class are very necessary.Previous studies have shown that effective classroom interaction can improve students’ English proficiency.However,in English class,there are always some students who remain silent due to various causes and do not participate in classroom interaction.When the teacher asks questions,these students are unwilling to cooperate with the teacher,evading or refusing to answer the teacher’s questions.This situation not only affects students to improve communication ability,but also affects the effectiveness of teachers in classroom teaching.For many years,most scholars have devoted themselves to the study of the phenomenon of classroom silence in the higher education stage,and a few people pay attention to the research on the phenomenon of classroom silence in junior high school.In view of this situation,the author takes 262 students and 6 English teachers in the NO.52 Middle School of Zhengzhou as the research subjects,and uses classroom observation,questionnaire and interview to study the following questions:1.What is the current situation of the classroom silence in junior high school English class?2.What are the main causes contributing to classroom silence in English class?3.What countermeasures should be taken to alleviate the classroom silence in English class?The main findings of this study are as follows: Firstly,the phenomenon of classroom silence exits in junior high school English class.The phenomenon of classroom silence becomes more serious as the grade increases.Secondly,the causes of classroom silence include students factors,teachers’ factors,and external factors.The student factors include student learning interest,English language proficiency,students’ personality and learning habits.The teacher factors include teachers’ teaching methods,feedback,questioning skill and teaching styles.The external factors include classroom atmosphere and traditional culture.Corresponding to the above causes,the author believes that alleviating the phenomenon of classroom silence in junior high school English class requires teachers and students to work together from multiple aspects.Firstly,the teachers should enhance students’ comprehensible input,make students realize the importance of participating in classroom interaction,improve teaching methods,questioning skills and teacher feedback.Secondly,students should strive to improve their English level and self-confidence,participate in classroom interaction actively and develop good learning habits.Finally,an active learning environment should be established.
