The ability of communication in English plays a more and more important role in society.As we all know,it is an important place for students to learn English in English class.Although English teachers in senior high school have tried cooperative teaching methods to change the silence of English class in senior high school,the effect is not particularly obvious.The silence of English class in senior high school not only hinders the normal teaching activities of teachers,but also hinders students from learning English well.How to change this silence,improve student’ activeness to take part in English class and teachers’ enthusiasm for teaching have become the main problems to be solved in senior high school.Therefore,the study of silence in English class in senior high schools is of great significance.In this study,150 students and 3 English teachers from Shuren Senior High School in Yangzhou are taken as subjects to explore the following issues:1.What is the current situation of senior high school students’ silence in English class?2.What are the main factors that affect senior high school students’ silence in English class?From the results of the study,the writer finds that the silence of English class in senior high schools is quite serious.The author mainly discussed the main factors that affect senior high school students’ silence in English class,including the atmosphere of English class,students’ personality,the motivation and interests of learning English,the competence of English,the anxiety of students,group psychology and consciousness of face,teachers’ teaching modes,teachers’ strategies of questioning,the feedback of English class and the relationship between teachers and students.According to the factors,the author also gave some suggestions from the following aspects: external aspects,which include creating a good environment of teaching and learning,and treating Chinese traditional culture correctly in different situations,and teachers’ aspects and students’ aspects,which include changing the traditional methods of teaching,giving students appropriate feedback,asking different questions,giving students enough time to think about questions,forming a good relationship between teachers and students,and so on.Due to the limitations of time and conditions,this study also has some shortcomings.This study only investigated silence of English class in senior high schools from three aspects: external factors,teachers’ factors and students’ factors.It needs to expand the scope of the research.Then,we can use more research instruments to make data more authentic.
