In recent years, more and more foreign tourists have been continuously flowing to Yancheng City for sightseeing.China Haiyan Museum is the only large-scale theme museum in the country that reflects the long history and civilization of China's sea salt.Obviously, this museum serves as an important window for displaying Yancheng's sea salt culture and for promoting a better understanding of Yancheng's history and culture by domestic and foreign audiences. Therefore,it is quite necessary and very significant to translate all the captions in the exhibition halls of the museum.First, this report introduces the background of the project, overviews relevant literature, emphasizes the significance of the research, and narrates the structure and main ideas of the thesis.Next,it analyzes the lexical and syntactic features of the project and describes the translation process, including pre-translation preparations, comprehension and reproduction, and post-translation proofreading. Then, the author attempts to translate the captions of the following exhibition halls into English---Human's Companion,Sea Salt History,Odes to Salt-Makers,and Salt & Yancheng.Guided by the "three rules" of Skopos Theory---skopos rule, coherence rule, and fidelity rule, the author devotes much time and effort to the translation of the project,by referring to such parallel texts as versions of the captions of the exhibition halls both in British Museum and American Sea Salt Museum.By grasping the textual features of the museum's commentaries, the author focuses on the analysis of typical examples rendered by domestication and foreignization so as to improve the translation quality and enhance its readability and smoothness. Finally,by using qualitative and quantitative analysis, the author proves the feasibility of applying multiple strategies for translation of the project, explaining why which strategy is most often employed. Finally, the author summarizes her findings and points out deficiencies in this report. This report aims to explore and prove the effectiveness of the principles and strategies for translation of the captions in China Haiyan Museum, highlighting the important role of the translator's full exertion of his subjectivity so as to provide reference for scholars who translate captions in museums and similar texts..
