"Nobody Speaks"and"Speak Nothing"

Samuel Beckett(1906-1989)'s trilogy Molloy,Malone Dies and The Unnamable embody his artistic aesthetics,and represent the highest achievement of his novels.The protagonists of the trilogy,Molloy,Moran,Malone and the unnamable,are in the image of the "the author".The trilogy mainly discuss that the subject identity,body suffering and language expression in the post-modern context.They lose the subjectivity of speak and their words refer to nothing.Beckett deconstructed the four protagonists as the "author" from the three levels of subject,body and language,showing "The death of the author" picture of "Nobody speaks" and "Speak nothing".First of all,the body as the basis of the subject and language,and the three are the basic elements which together constitute of human beings.However,the main body of the trilogy is incomplete or deformed,Molloy and Moran have disability in the legs and senses;Malone is dying in his old age;the unnamable has no specific body image.The deconstruction of the body makes the novel realize the prediction of "the death of the author" in reality.At the same time,in Molloy and Malone's Death,Molloy and Moran,Malone's body are controlled by power,their bodies are supervised and disciplined,and they lose their independence as "author".Secondly,as the subject of "nobody speak",although they are presented in the novel as an author,at the same time their identities are uncertain,mainly reflected in the random change of names,the confusion of the boundaries between subject and object,narrator and the object of narrator.The loss of identity urges them to search for a certain self in reality and writing,but the process of searching also ends in failure.Finally,the four main characters appear in the text in a chaotic state of consciousness,which is unpredictable.Finally,as the expression of "speak nothing",the protagonists of the novel have a strong desire to express,but they also encounter the inevitable expression of dilemma,which is based on the break of language and reality,they realize that language is helpless and powerless for the expressing of themselves and the reflecting of the reality.Therefore,they can only play narrative games in a language full of repetition and paradox,finally,the narrator dispels his own existence in the constant doubt and negation,and the language becomes a wandering voice of signifier.Beckett's writing is deeply influenced by Descartes and Mauthner in philosophy,and inherits Joyce,Proust and in literature.Meanwhile,his writing of "the death of the author" influences many post-modern theories on the subject deconstruction.Although Beckett's trilogy have positive significance in deconstruction of metaphysical man and presupposition of postmodern theory,it inevitably brings negative influence of relativism and nihilism because it overemphasizes "nobody speak" and "speak nothing".Human is an animal that pursues meaning.How to reconstruct "the author" as the subject of human life,and how to solve the dilemma of "nobody speak" and "speak nothing",inter-subjectivity and poetic language expression maybe can give us good inspiration.
