Edited by two professors of law,Filippo Annunziata and Giorgio Fabio Colombo, the book Law and Opera is a collection of legal academic essays aimed to study the relationship between law and opera by analyzing the libretti of operas. The report is based on the translation practice of one of the essays in the first part of this book. The essay, entitled “Criminal Law in Giacomo Puccini Operatic Production: The Crimes Against Persons in Tosca” written by Pietro Gandetto,is an analysis of the crimes against the characters in Puccini's opera,Tosca, from the perspectives of law and opera. It is an informative text with a large number of technical terms, complex and long sentences, all of which bring about much difficulty in translation. This report is an attempt to select long sentences of the source text and discusses the ways to translate them. The author first gives an introduction to the source text and then analyzes the translation of long sentences therein.Several methods are found to be effective in translation, such as embedding, cutting, reversing, converting, and splitting. In addition, the author finds that the parallel text is of vital importance in the mastery of the translating styles, and so hopes that this report will provide reference to the translation of long sentences in legal academic texts.
