A Report On Consecutive Interpreting For A Meeting Between Britishconsuls And Dongguan Municipal Government Officers

Chinglish has long been a common problem for native Chinese interpreters.Chinglish often appears in interpretation,which will undermine the effect of communication to a certain extent.How to overcome Chinglish in consecutive interpretation is a problem worthy of attention.This report is based on the interpreting practice of a joint meeting between British consuls in Guangzhou and officials from Dongguan municipal government.The report consists of 5 chapters.The first chapter introduces the interpreting task discussed in this report,including the background information of the speakers,meeting schedule and a brief analysis of features and styles of the interpreting task.The second chapter describes the whole process of the interpreting practice: the interpreter's pre-task preparation,on-site performance and post-task evaluation.The pre-task preparation part contains the writer's communication with the organizer of the meeting,glossary making,background information searching and on-site preparation.The author encountered 3 major problems during the interpreting process: avoiding redundancy caused by Chinglish in the production,clarifying the implicit logical relations of the original text and dealing with the expressions with Chinese characteristics.Chapter 2 interpreting process elaborates on the whole process of the meeting and major problems the writer encountered during the process.The part of post-task evaluations displays comments on the writer's performance from the clients and the writer's own reflections.The 4th chapter is the core part of this report.Based on the analysis of the process of the interpreting practice,from the perspective of the theory of negative transfer of mother tongue,in view of the three major difficulties the writer encountered in the process of interpreting,the author selected examples and analyzed the causes of Chinglish in the process of interpreting and the corresponding solutions.In the 5th chapter,the author discussed the potential results,implications and limitations of this report,hoping to provide some guidance for student interpreters who undertake interpreting tasks with similar characteristics.The author hopes that this report can help student interpreters avoid using redundant Chinglish and neglecting the hidden logical relations of Chinese sentences in Chinese-English consecutive interpretation.At the same time,the author hopes to provide some reference for student interpreters to deal with expressions with Chinese characteristics.
