A Report On Liaison Interpreting For The 2019 ATB China Sales Mission·guangzhou

In international tourism promotion,interpreters serve as language bridges,figuring prominently in the talks among different parties.As liaison interpreting tasks encompass various genres,interpreters may work under tremendous pressure.When misunderstanding or even verbal conflicts occur,situation may prove even tougher.In this connection,in addition to his/her role as a language converter,the interpreter also plays other roles to facilitate smooth communication between both sides.This report is based on the author’s personal experience as an interpreter for the2019 ATB China Sales Mission·Guangzhou.It details all such interpreting-related activities as background information collection,pre-task preparation,client’s feedback and self-evaluation,as well as challenges faced and difficulties encountered.Through specific interpreting cases,an analysis is made of different roles played by the author in fulfilling the interpreting tasks.These include roles as mediator,text-organizer,active participant and client’s assistant besides that as language converter.It is the author’s hope that this report,through the analysis of the multiple roles played by interpreters in liaison interpreting tasks,may shed light on future interpreters and thus enable them to properly and flexibly switch roles in real life liaison interpreting and improve the quality of interpreting tasks.
