This is a report on the English-Chinese translation of the excerpts from The Great Believers written by Rebecca Makkai. The novel describes the whole course of the AIDS epidemic chronologically, from its initial outbreak to the present, conveying the terrors and tragedies caused in the first few years and the consequences over the past decades. With its great literary value, the book has been listed as one of the New York Times' Best 10 Books of the Year for 2018.The translator chooses Chapter 36,38,40,42,44 and 46 excerpted from Part 2015 as the source text. The great literary value of the novel is closely linked with the author's excellent written skills and her accurate grasp of people's emotions in the novel. In view of its careful choice of words and complex building of sentence, the translator spends lots of time thinking about how to deliver an excellent translation.Considering this, the translator, under the theoretical guidance of the three principles of translation put forward by Alexander Fraser Tytler, adopts translation methods such as division, addition and conversion to deal with translation on the lexical, syntactic and rhetorical level. The translator tries to make sure that target language readers can enjoy the novel as its source language readers. The translator has benefited a lot from the translation practice. On the one hand, comprehension and expression being the two key points in translation practice, the translator should improve bilingual skills to achieve thorough comprehension of the source text and precise expression in the target text.On the other hand,an excellent translation can be presented through the combination of theory and practice.Under the guidance of translation theory, the translator can provide translation of higher quality.Based on translation practice, the translator can contribute to the development of translation theories and be better prepared for a career as a professional translator.
