A Study On The C-E Translation Of Quotation Text From The Perspective Of Interpretive Theory

Quotation text is of a special literary genre,which served as a recorder of someone?s utterances.Stylistically,it lays stress on extracting a single sentence or words with the features of being short and concise,lack of literary grace,and setting little store by discourse structure and the connection between content and context.Due to its distinctive stylistic form,the translation of quotation text has the peculiarity that other textual translation doesn?t have.Words for University Counselors is written by a university counselor who has been engaging in ideological and political education in universities for more than 30 years and was awarded the title of national moral model.The book is a quotation text,dividing the counselor?s words into 130 themes,including patriotism,safety,love,broad learning,sociability,etc.Every theme contains 20 sentences,and the entire book records approximately 2,600 quotations filled with profound implications,which represents the outlook and wisdom of ideological and political educators in Chinese institutions of higher learning.This thesis takes the translation practice,Words for University Counselors,as the research object to dissert three general principles that shall be abided by during the translation of quotation text under the framework of the interpretive theory and in combination with the stylistic features of quotation text.The author first points out the brevity of the source text should be retained and the clarity of translation shall be improved.Second,the semantic correspondence among quotations and logical relationship within quotations ought to be explicated.Third,the original outlook on values and perspectives are supposed to be adhered to.On this foundation,the author focuses on two prominent stylistic features of quotation text in Words for University Counselors:(1)colloquial expressions(2)“quotes within quotes”.According to interpretive functions,the author subdivides each stylistic feature to further analyze the translation techniques applied to them.On the one hand,the author expects this report can promote the application value of the interpretative theory,expand its theoretical applicability in translation studies,and provide a reference for scholars to further study the interpretative theory.On the other hand,the author hopes this thesis can also assist translators to enhance translation equality and efficiency in their future translation of quotation text or other similar texts,and inspire subsequent researchers to study the translation strategies of quotation text.
