As Chinese scholars have improved their academic capacity, they are increasingly interested in publishing their works abroad as a way to showcase their academic achievements and exchange their views with foreign scholars. Therefore, the translation of academic texts has become more important. The thesis is based on a case study regarding the problems faced by the author when translating Global Cities from Chinese to English and strategies for solving them.Specifically,as a social science book,Global Cities is characterized by large numbers of terms, which carry obscure meanings. Moreover, the logic of some sentences is not clear because of redundancy and vague expressions. Therefore, the author proposes the following strategies based on some translation theories, including the strategies for translating terms and the feature of cohesion in English: i)draw on reference documents to accurately translate terms and concepts,ii)analyze the context to understand the exact meaning of vague sentences and iii)make the logic of the text clear by refining the original one.Hopefully, this thesis will give new insights into the translation of academic texts.
