With the development of modern aesthetics, the theory of art separated from aesthetics, and became an independent discipline in China in 2011.In order to clarify the key issues and classics of art theory, this thesis advocates returning to the context of Western Aesthetics,to discuss the production of discourses about art.The Western Aesthetics writings has been introduced and translated in China for more than a century, which are important sources for the local study of art. However, there are still many unknown fields and gaps in this field. What is the relationship between aesthetics and art theory in traditional Western Aesthetics?Where are the researches focus on?Which one can be called classic? How the mainstream became popular and changed during past different periods? Those are all issues that deserve our attention. This thesis takes aesthetics readers as research objects, and uses digital humanities as main method, from multiple layers, such as,subjects analysis, authors analysis, and classics analysis,to draw a picture of the knowledge production of art theory in aesthetics, and providing a reference for the construction of domestic art theory. This thesis is based on the corpus constructed by fifty English aesthetic readers published after the 1950s.The main contents include the following different parts.Firstly, the preface introduces the reason of the study of artistic discourses within aesthetic classics, mainly about the particularity and innovation of the research objects--aesthetic readers. The second part is to conduct an overall survey of the aesthetic readers, specifically analyze the style and theme settings of the English aesthetic readers and the presentation of art in the aesthetic reader. The third part focus on the changes of artistic themes, from the perspective of diachrony and synchronicity, according to the subjects setting in the aesthetic readers. The forth part compares the various knowledge producers’and schools’ influences in different periods, judging by the list of authors and their frequency, acquired by basing on the bibliometric data of the aesthetic readers’ contents, and laid special stress on high-frequency authors. The fifth part is about the text mining on 120 articles using Natural Language Processing tools, specifically TF-IDF,LDA and word2vec to obtain the word classification and keyword co-occurrence network. The sixth part summarized the previous discussion, and states the general features of the development of art theory in aesthetics, thereby, forming a basic understanding of the production of art theory in Western Aesthetics, and also discussed the possibility of further research in the future.
