A Report On The Translation Of Language,mind And Body: A Conceptual History(Chapter 5)

The translation material in this report is extracted from Language,Mind and Body: A Conceptual History,written by John E.Joseph,professor of applied linguistics at the University of Edinburgh.As the first book to trace the long conceptual history behind linguistics,it explores what language is and where it exists,covering linguistics,philosophy,medicine,literature,religion,and so on.Since the book has not been translated into Chinese yet,its translation has certain academic value and can provide some references for similar translation studies in the future.Based on the translation practice of nearly 20,000 words,the report analyzes the theme,rheme,focus,topic,thematic progression pattern,etc.of the source text at the lexical,syntactic and textual level,to summarize the translation strategies which include conversion,addition,reconstructing,retaining and splitting the thematic structure.Under the guide of information structure theory,the translator can analyze texts in a dynamic way to reasonably arrange the information and its focus,making the target text more coherent and smoother.The report is divided into four parts: 1)task description,briefly introducing the translation task and its significance;2)description of the translation process,including pre-translation preparation,specific translation process,and post-translation quality management;3)case study,which analyzes how to solve the difficulties encountered in the translation process under the guidance of information structure theory at the lexical,syntactic and textual level;4)conclusion,which makes a summary and points out limitations of the report.
