Harold Pinter(1930-2008),the 2005 Nobel Prize winner in literature,is one of the important British playwrights. He has written 31 dramatic works as well as various poetry and films.‘Pinteresque' is an adjective which has been an entry in the Oxford Dictionary. In the Nobel Prize academy,Pinter is also praised that he has charted a territory,a Pinterland with a distinct topography. In China, there are abundant studies on Pinter's works with different literary theories. However, the systematic study on “pinteresque” style is relatively fewer. Therefore, based on the results of previous research, this thesis will use text analysis method to study the dynamic and diachronic characteristics of “pinteresque” style, through analyzing Pinter's biographies, addresses, interviews, and all of his plays in different periods. This thesis finds out three clear characteristics separately on the threat theme, the uncertainty expression technique, and the value pursuit of humanity.Pinter describes the real-life fragments of the lower-class people.By revealing the omnipresent threat hidden in the peace,he shows the prevalence of insecurity and fear of those ordinary people.Pinter uses the uncertainty in various aspects, which comes from the combination of absurdity and reality,to let audience feel resonant with the characters on the stage and rethink about their own hardship.Pinter cares a lot about the ordinary's suffering. He tries to trigger the audience's inner desire to change by objectively showing the cruel situations and people's different choices. In his plays,it could be found that these three characteristics are showed in various ways.Pinter keeps exploring new ways to develop these three characteristics.By systematically interpret “pinteresque” style, this thesis tries to provide a new study aspect for “Pintersque” research.
