The Initial Research On Uncertainty Personality Of College Students

On the base of overviews of former researches and interview with psychological experts, the current study put forward its own theoretical hypothesis on uncertainty personality. According to it, the study designed a preliminary questionnaire on uncertainty orientation and uncertainty response of college students' uncertainty personality, which were formed into formal questionnaires after initial testing, after open-ended questionnaire and interview with college students. Through investigating uncertainty personality of 605 college students, and the relationship between uncertainty personality of 342 college students and coping style, the results are:(1) The questionnaires on uncertainty orientation and uncertainty response of college students designed by this research are of validity and reliability. Two dimensions of uncertainty orientation of college students are found: tolerance and finding novelty, and the same of uncertainty response: comfort and resolve, after factor analysis. This is in line with the current theoretical hypothesis.(2) The property of specialty will affect the exhibition of college students on the two dimensions of tolerance and action, and art students do better than science students on tolerance of uncertainty, while science students do better than art students on resolving uncertainty. But on the dimensions of comfort and finding novelty, the property of specialty won't affect the college students' exhibition. Apart from that, the property of specialty won't affect which uncertainty personality type art students and science students will be either.(3) On dimensions of uncertainty personality and personality type of College students, the gender difference does not exist.(4) On dimensions of uncertainty personality and personality type of College students, the interactive functions of property of specialty and gender will not affect the exhibition of the college students.(5) There exists negative relation between the comfort dimension of uncertainty personality and negative coping style, negative relation between tolerance dimension and positive coping style, and positive relation between action dimension and positive coping style. And there exists positive relation between typical certainty personality, medial type, typical uncertainty personality and positive coping.(6) Typical uncertainty personality and typical certainty personality will affect the exhibition of the college students on positive coping, and the same as typical uncertainty personality and medial type. Exactly speaking, the students who are typical uncertainty personality do better than those who are typical certainty personality or medial type. But on negative coping, all the uncertainty personalities don't exist difference.
