A Translation Report On Language,Mind And Body:A Conceptual History (Excerpts)

This is a translation report on excerpts of Language,Mind and Body: A Conceptual History(chapter one and the first four sections of chapter two).Language,Mind and Body: A Conceptual History,written by John E.Joseph,extends across linguistics,philosophy,medicine,as well as literary and religious dimensions.It explores the question of what language is and where it is located.In addition,it also delves into accounts of connecting language to the body,so as to assess which can inject new power into today's models.As an academic work,this book is of great academic value and research significance,so it's necessary to translate it.Academic works generally have a large number of long sentences with complex structures.For this reason,this report takes Information Structure Theory as its theoretical framework,aiming to convey the original information to readers accurately and fluently.In the process of translation,the translator analyzes non-finite clauses,subordinate clauses,and discourses by combining thematic structure and information structure,and summarizes the corresponding translation strategies.For the translation at the syntactic level,following the original syntactic order and separation should be adopted in most cases,which can restore the original information structure and focus.On the other hand,strategies for discourse translation are splitting the original thematic structure,preserving the original thematic progression pattern,and transforming the original thematic progression pattern,in order to make the translation fluent and natural.This report probes the value and significance of information structure theory in guiding the translation practice through the case study,hoping to shed new light on researches into the translation of academic works.
