A Report On The Translation Of Hannah Coulter(Chapter 11-24)

Literary works have always been a key but difficult part in translation.The style of literary works can be manifested in vocabulary,sentence patterns,rhetoric,artistic devices,and others.Differences,like punctuation marks and emotional expressions,in Chinese and English languages,often pose obstacles to literary translation.This translation practice material is selected from the novel Hannah Coulter(Chapter 11 to 24)written by the American translator Wendell Berry.From the feminist perspective,the author tells the entire life of Hannah Coulter in Port William using the first-person narration,which fully implies people’s nostalgia for small collective family farming.The translator adopts Research Engine and Online dictionary as main tools during the translation process and finishes the translation under the guidance of Tytler’s Three Principles of Translation and Liu Miqing’s Stylistic Markers Theory and summarizes the whole translation practice in this report.For the translator,the difficulties in this translation practice mainly lie in linguistic and stylistic levels.In this report,the translator lists difficult points in descriptive words,reconstruction of various sentence patterns and style transcoding,combined with the specific case analysis in the process of translation,and uses a variety of translation methods to expound the two theories in the application of novel translation to achieve the purpose of this translation practice which goes to reproduce the linguistic and stylistic features of the source text so that readers of the target language can resonate similarly in emotions with readers of the source language.Literary translation can be viewed as a thorny branch across all translation sectors.In cases of literary transference,translators should be able to start from the details to find out the impediments and choose a tangle of strategies and techniques to ensure the perfection of the target text.The translator hopes to be able to provide some references for similar literary translating practices through the analysis of casesand strategies.This report contains four parts: task description,process description,case study and conclusion.Task description provides an introduction of the source text and its author,as well as the significance of this task.Process description focuses on the total process from initial preparation to post-translation proofreading.Case study and conclusion illustrate the difficulties appearing in translation practice and strategies adopted by the translator.
