The representation of the style of the original has always been a key and difficult problem in literary translation. The author of the present thesis felt at a loss as to how to solve this problem when she tried to improve her translation of the first three chapters of Algernon Blackwood’s novel The Extra Day.In the process of reviewing the literature, the author was impressed with Liu Miqing’s Stylistic Markers Theory, whichproposes to understand the style of a work of literature from the perspective of specific linguistic features and which develops a style-oriented translation method. The author hypothesized that the Stylistic Markers Theory could guide the translator to render the style of the novel more effectively. The author then proceeded to improve her translation under the guidance of the Stylistic Markers Theory. The process and results of solving the problem of rendering the style of the original in the light of the theory are reported in the translation commentary part of this thesis, which can be summarized as follows:1.The Stylistic Markers Theory helped the present translator to identify the ormal stylistic markers of the source text and objectively analyze its style at a asic level;2.Grounded on the concept of formal stylistic markers and the linguistic features f Blackwood’s novel, the translator added and analyzed several markers hich are not listed in the Stylistic Markers Theory so that the stylistic features f the original text can be grasped more comprehensively;3.On the basis of the above work, the translator dynamically transformed the arious stylistic markers in the original into corresponding or equivalent markers in the target language. To ensure that the target text is both close to the original in style and natural in Chinese, the translator supplemented the aforementioned transformation with the use of such translation strategies as amplification and sentence splitting. The results of solving the problem of style rendition in the translation project basically support the initial idea of the study. The author concludes that guided by the Stylistic Markers Theory, the translator can objectively grasp the style of the original by locating key linguistic structures that contribute to its expression before transforming the identified markers into the target language, thereby translating the style of novels in an effective way.
