Measure word is an important feature of modern Chinese which is different from ancient Chinese.It is a distinguishing feature from the Indo-European languages.It is also one of the parts of language which is difficult for Chinese learners to understand and master.How to present it reasonably in the textbook layout and how to allow learners to master and use it flexibly in actual teaching? We are constantly improving.This article explores the value of reference from two sets of representative Chinese textbooks in the late Qing dynasty(Mandarin Primer compiled by F.W.Baller,a missionary in China,and A Progressive Cours compiled by Thomas Francis Wade,a diplomat.)Based on predecessors' research on measure words and the current status of quantifier teaching,we conducted an in-depth analysis of measure words and their teaching in the late Qing Dynasty,and concluded that the Westerners in the late Qing Dynasty have begun to try to understand Chinese from the perspective of the mother tongue,Recognizing the uniqueness of quantifiers,try to classify quantifiers simply.From the perspective of teaching materials,the use of quantifiers in late Qing Dynasty already has many pragmatic features such as replacement of nouns and general reference.The basic principles of textbook compilation and measure word arrangement,The quantifier teaching methods and translation strategies are very similar to those of today,and they are still worth learning from.This paper is divided into the following chapters.The first chapter is the introduction,which mainly explains the research significance,content and current situation of this paper.The second chapter is to clarify the basic structure of textbooks,to sort out the measure word in textbooks in detail,to analyze the presentation of measure word in textbooks,and to summarize the characteristics of measure word.The third chapter summarizes the English translation of measure word in the textbook.It examines the understanding of quantifiers from an external perspective.The fourth chapter is from the perspective of grammar,to explore the combination ability of measure word and other parts of speech from the textbook,and the pragmatic functions of phrases,sentences and texts.The fifth chapter is to summarize the teaching methods of measure words in the textbook through the previous research,and make a brief comparison with "Boya Chinese" to verify the advanced nature of the textbooks in the late Qing Dynasty,and provide reference for the teaching and layout of measure words today.The sixth chapter is the conclusion part,which summarizes the research results of measure word in the textbooks of the late Qing Dynasty,organize the main points of this paper,and points out the shortcomings.
