1850–1940 is the historical period when the semi-colonial and semi-feudal society of China gradually formed and collapsed, lots of western officials and missionaries came to China to live and work, and left many precious Mandarin books and materials. By using The Chinese Recorder and Missionary Journal of the China: Trade, Politics says and Culture, 1793-1980 which has been collected overseas as literature sources and study subject, this article researches the content of the Mandarin books in this period, analyses the features and the laws of how western people used to learn Mandarin, and arranges the Mandarin textbooks compiled by the missionaries, the translated religious work, historically discusses the situation of Chinese language, and the westerner’s attitude towards Mandarin and the teaching strategy at that time. And then come to the conclusion that the variety of Mandarin books and the diversification of its transmission, the Mandarin teaching’s reach to every aspect of people’s life, and the westerner’s attitude towards Mandarin of the days were processes which had gradually developed and deepened. Wish this will provide more useful information for researching Mandarin as a second language, and academic value for compiling teaching materials of Teaching Chinese As A Second Language nowadays.
