In 1980's of China, many thoughts were widely discussed, for example, the criterion of truth, humanitarianism and enlightenment. Among these fruitful discussions, since 1978, the humanitarian tide started from caring for human beings and rethought the Marxism theory. According to the identity, these participants can be classified into two groups, i.e., the Communist Party of China's theorists and intellectuals who believe in Marxism. This thought discussion lasts for two time periods. The first time period, from 1978 to 1982, focused on the philosophy area and hence was of relatively small influence. The second time period, from 1983 to 1984, Zhou Yang and Hu Qiaomu with special identities, also joined in the discussion, which propelled the discussion to a new high and then led to the termination of the discussion with several conflicting divergences. These divergences were gradually forgotten over the past decades. However, in the contemporary Chinese ideological history, this theory, which reunderstands the thought of "human" in Marxism from the perspective of humanitarian, opens the second "enlightenment". How does this discussion influence the contemporary Chinese ideological history? In this thesis, regarding the debate between Zhou Yang and Hu Qiaomu in 1983 as the hitting point, we interprets this discussion from the view of ideological history. This thesis is composed of six chapters. In Chapter 1, we introduce the motivation of this work and the current research. In Chapter 2, we describe the background of the debate between Zhou Yang and Hu Qiaomu in 1983, focusing on the historical and theoretical backgrounds. In Chapter 3, we illustrate the details of this debate. In Chapter 4, we elaborate on the opinions of Zhou Yang and Hu Qiaomu, respectively. In Chapter 5, we discuss the reasons of this debate and in Chapter 6, we conclude this thesis. Based on these discussions, we try to analyze how the debate influence the contemporary Chinese ideological history.
