In 311 CE,Luoyang, capital of Western Jin dynasty was captured by the Huns and the majorities from the North established their own political power.A large number of the Hans from Central Plains were forced to move to the South to seek refuge with the Eastern Jin dynasty and Sima Rui,who had crossed the Yangtze River and established the new dynasty. The emigrant Hans, comprised of civilians, gentry and equipped vagrant groups, came into the life of indigenous people living in the South. With the rising contradictions between two groups, robberies occurred frequently and even rebellion emerged, which posed a real threat to the survival of Eastern Jin dynasty.Besides, the authority attached great importance to the role of two groups. The civilians brought abundant labor force and source of taxes, while the gentry became helpers of the emperor governing the country and vagrant groups could help the authority to launch military actions. On the other hand, the establishment of the new dynasty cannot be achieved without the support and recognition of indigenous people. Therefore, how to help migrants settle down and how to keep the good relationship between migrants and indigenous people had been a significant issue for the dynasty. This thesis consists of three parts. In the first part, the relationship amongst the Qiao(migrants),the Liu(vagrants)and the Old(indigenous people)shown in the early Eastern Jin dynasty will be demonstrated. The contradictions as well as the disputes between the Sima clans and indigenous people, the emigrant gentry and the indigenous gentry, and the migrants and indigenous people will be also introduced in this part, with the importance of changes in the relationship emphasized. The second part specifies changes in the relationship amongst three groups led by rites and laws of the Eastern Jin dynasty, analyzing the roles that the selection of officials, decree and punishment, and legislation of household registration, taxes as well as land had played in the changes. The last part discusses about both positive and negative impact brought by rite and laws, involving not only the three groups, but also the whole society. This thesis mainly adopts research methods in the legal history field. With the analysis of the related documents about the Eastern Jin dynasty, case study, historical research, comparative study,inter-disciplinary research and other methods are applied to discuss about the changes in the relationship amongst the Qiao, the Liu and the Old brought by the rites and laws of the Jin dynasty after the imperial household moved to the South. The laws and the influences will both be mentioned in the thesis. In general, those rites and laws effectively improved the relationship amongst the three groups and enhanced the social integration during the Eastern Jin dynasty.
