During the end of 1860s and early 1870s,most of the Russian populists proposed to establish various associations and communes to realize their political ideal.However,the Czar's reactionary policy brutality made these people gradually abandoned the idea of establishing an agricultural community in Russia.They were forced to go into exile with their ideal.They started to make a new plan,that is to establish communities in other countries,mainly in America.The object of this thesis is the practice of Vladimir Konstantinovich Geins(William Frey),N.Chaikovsky,Alexander Kapitonovich Maliko.By using the method of history and sociology,the thesis entirety discusses their practice and entirety analyzes the background and process of the Russian populists to the United States,and the process of their building communities.The Cedarvale Community was the only community which built totally by Russian populists and it was also their attempt to carry a socialism practice in America.The purpose of establishing a community by populists was to find an ideal lifestyle that can change the old world.However,the community was just like a utopia and it was contrary to the development of the times.Besides,the internal system of the community was strict;the members were complex,and the conflicts between members were prominent,so the community was existed only for two years.
